Frida = Charlene
Kasian = Kahlo
Frida Kahlo is one of the
artists I feel close to. Of
course, she died while I was an infant.
So, I never had the opportunity to meet her.
I have had to be satisfied by reading of her life and viewing her works;
Both fascinate me.
I see incongruous
parallels between my friend Charlene and Frida. Since I did not know Frida, I can only assume that
these things I notice must be projections of my understanding upon my friend’s
image. Both were injured in
their youth. Both underwent
multiple surgical operations. Both
used art to express themselves through and beyond their convalescences. Both seem driven to excel.
Both are intelligent. Both
seem to have misinterpreted their self-images and considered themselves to be
broken not wholly mended. (This
last comparison is true and false at the same time. For no one can evaluate the thoughts of another.
Yes, they were broken. Yes,
they have recovered to whatever extent nature allowed.
Yes, they seem to be wonderful people – people I’d like to meet.
Yes, they seem to believe that they are somehow less than they truly are.
How is it that I can look at a being and see one being while that being
can look at herself and see a completely different species?
