Old dogs, perhaps the last of the Beats
Warmth & Fire
Marianne and I spent the evening in Newark. The Ironbound (so-called because this section of the city is isolated by surrounding rail lines) section is called “Down Neck” by the residents. This name probably descends from colonial times. Casa Vasca is a wonderful Portuguese restaurant on Elm Street. After dinner we attended a poetry reading by Allen Ginsberg and Amira Baraka. These rebels are now old men and exude a feeling of comfortable wisdom. I remember them as fiery dogs, snapping at the establishment. Today, the fire has progressed to a warm glow.
